Typha?angustifolia | Narrow-leaf cattail | Marginal Plant

  • Marginal Plant - submerge slightly
  • Plant in sun or partial shade in wet soil or water
  • A bright and versatile accent plant
  • Low maintenance and beneficial to wildlife

This cattail has very long, narrow (typically 1/4 to 1/2 inch wide), bluish-green to grey-green leaves, reaching impressive heights of 5-10 feet, creating a strong vertical element in waterscapes.

In summer, it produces the iconic dark brown, sausage-shaped female flower spikes (catkins) below a smaller, yellowish male spike. There is usually a distinct gap on the stem between the male and female flower parts. Provides important habitat and nesting sites for marsh birds and muskrats.

Fully hardy and robust, it is low maintenance but can be a vigorous spreader by rhizomes in favorable conditions, forming dense colonies that are excellent for wildlife.

Ideal for larger ponds, wetlands, and habitat restoration projects. Thrives in full sun in shallow water up to 12 inches (30cm) deep, or in consistently moist, boggy soil.
