Typha?latifolia | Broad-leaf cattail (bulrush) | Marginal Plant

  • Marginal Plant - submerge slightly
  • Plant in sun or partial shade in wet soil or water
  • A bright and versatile accent plant
  • Low maintenance and beneficial to wildlife

This species has wide (1/2 to 1 inch), flat, greyish-green leaves, growing vigorously to heights of 5-9 feet (1.5-2.7m), often forming dense stands that are iconic in wetland scenery.

The familiar, dense, dark brown, sausage-like female flower spikes appear in summer, persisting through winter. The yellowish male flowers are directly above the female part, with no gap. Highly valuable for wildlife, providing cover, nesting sites, and food.

Extremely hardy and adaptable, but very vigorous and can rapidly colonize shallow water areas. Historically, various parts of the plant were used for food, medicine, and crafts.

Best suited for larger natural ponds, lakes, and wetland restoration projects due to its significant spreading nature. Thrives in full sun and shallow water up to 12 inches (30cm) deep.
